Birds and Squirrels

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

One of the most wonderful revelations about our new house is the huge number of birds and other wildlife in the garden. And we are doing our best to encourage them by putting out a variety of nuts, seeds and fat balls. Over the last few months we have seen birds we have never seen before (a siskin and a nuthatch), watched fluffy little chicks growing up and spotted our first ever red squirrels. Liz also got a brief glimpse of a tiny pine marten, but by the time she had gone to blueberries for it it had gone. She suspects it might have smelled the barbecue, so hopefully it will return.

The red squirrels are surprisingly tame and are happy to visit when the patio door is open and we are wandering round the living room (although a stifled sneeze was enough to send one skittering away!). They are super cute and we think there have been two different ones visit our nut feeder. The one below seems not to be able to scale the pole, and so it climbs up the bush behind and then jumps across to the top if the feeder and shimmies down. All very entertaining.

Swallows are in abundance and nest on both gable ends of the house and by the front door (not sure whether that will change when we move in) and there's also evidence that birds nested in the garage - probably when a previous garage door wasn't secure! The cuckoo and woodpecker can also be heard most of the time - all in all, a garden paradise.
