Liz has been trawling the internet for local events in and around Dunoon - let's find out what's going on on our front doorstep and join in a bit!
The first of these was a quilting exhibition by the local quilting group in Dunoon - a 40th anniversary extravaganza which, has to be said, was excellent. Who knew there was so much technique to quilting. It was both beautiful and impressive. It was only a couple of quid to get in and Liz bought some raffle tickets which landed us first prize of a hand made quilt from the group - about 6 foot by 6 foot. The cats quite like it!
Next up was a group of musicians and singers that Dave and Heather know, giving a mini gig in the Kames Hotel where we've eaten several times. So, we were invited to go and show some support for a little trial run. Not necessarily tunes to our taste but great to hear amateurs giving it a go! We had dinner before hand as well, and it was very good, as usual.
There are a few events on in the local village hall. It is one mile as the crow flies if we chose to walk across the fields, but about six miles if we drive round. This week was a non-demoninational Songs of Praise organised by a couple we know, Grace and Roger. It was a decent group and Grace and Roger, plus one other lady, provided the music for us all to sing to. It was a lovely mix of songs which created a joyful and uplifting hour, followed by a buffet and sharing of faith.
At the end of May Voices of Argyll put on a Scottish/Indian fusion event called Interwoven. There was a selection of Indian inspired songs, a sitar, a Bollywood dancer and tabla player. A brillaint evening, but the highlight was definetly the sitar/tabla improvisation which was amazing - a kind of Indian Jazz, if you like. Wonderful.
We've been over to Inverary now several times to see Adam and Emma and have a meal at The George - a lovely pub. They have a beer garden at the back and run some live music events over the summer, so we thought we'd give it a go! After a nice catch up with Adam and Emma at their house then a little walk along the shore front at Minard, we headed to the pub. Initially the music outside wasn't that good / to our taste / a little too loud (we're so old!) so we headed inside for some of our lunchtime favorites off the menu - fish and chips and burgers (one venison, one beef). John even tried the macaroni cheese as a side which is odd as he has an aversion to it from a bad childhood experience - but he's trying to stretch his relatively limited menu choices! Anyhow, after food we headed back out and the music was a lot better suited - a lovely folk group playing Scottish / Irish music, by a loch, in the summer sunshine with kids dancing and it really summed up what's unique about this place. A little later a Paul Weller tribute band, which were really good, fired themselves up, in tune, not too loud and playing all the usual favorites. A lovely day out with friends.
