As we headed into the New Year our first visit was planned for late January off the back of a trip to the Shetland Islands for Up Helly Aa! We had decided to fly to Shetland from Edinburgh specifically so that we could bolt on a couple of days at Clacheranmor.
Obviously a three bed house with one bed wasn't going to be enough in the long term, but Mum and Dad's plans to come with us at Easter meant we needed to get another bed up to the house so we didn't have to sleep on the floor. The January trip felt like the natural time to sort that out.
In keeping with the Japanese theme Liz decided to buy a futon from The Futon Company. We carefully chose and ordered the required items to build a bed frame, tatami mat inserts and a traditional futon mattress and bolster pillows, a mattress protector and covers.
After some faffing about and finding out that (despite the house being on the mainland) some delivery companies basically don't want to deliver to Argyll and Bute, we found a solution - on the face of it complex but it fitted in with out plans: buy a bed, as the Futon Company has a branch in Edinburgh, and pick it up on our way back from Shetland - job done?
Well after some polite and gentle persuasion (we can't store items for more than a couple of days) the Futon Company played ball, and with a set of roof bars, bin liners and gaffer tape (guaranteed to rain at some point on the journey) we got the bed to the house all well and good.
Assembly - well thankfully there's only a few nuts and bolts so when you inevitably get it wrong, it doesn't take much time to undo it and start again.
What's it like to lie on - not sure what a night on it's like yet, but seems pretty 'firm'. Liz is looking forward to trying out the authentic Japanese night's sleep and seeing if it does her sore back any good. We just need sheets, pillows and duvet now.
Another trip to the house meant another opportunity to get to know our new neighbours, Dave and Heather, better and pick up again with Emma and Adam so we had two lovely evenings out where we were treated to some wonderful hospitality. By the end of the week we felt very lucky indeed!
