Fun Times in February

Dinner at Portavadie

Another local restaurant needing a test drive was at the posh marina at Portavadie. We'd heard good reviews but John for some reason was a bit sceptical - thinking out of season, it may be not be that well frequented and the food not fresh. He was wrong, the restaurant was big - it is very seasonal - but quite busy and the food was fresh and tasty. We both had fish and chips and Liz even treated herself to a lunchtime Kir Royale. Great views over the marina and we'll be back for more - probably the restaurant setting would suit a lunch with friends visiting us. (Liz was less impressed - yes the food was nice, but the ambiance was supposed to be upper class but was cheaply done and left her feeling slightly cold, and it wasn't as clean as you would expect for a restaurant of that standard.)

2024 Braw Beard and Moustache Championships

We do like to do some random stuff and February's random event was 'The Beard and Moustache Competition' in Glasgow, at the Drygate Brewery. You gotta try some of this stuff even though it's just completely bonkers! Drygate Brewery is small craft brewery next to the massive Tennant's brewery and, although I can't drink that much, I did manage a pint of their IPA - proper is all I'll say. You can buy their stuff online of course.

Anyhow, the beard competition was a right laugh - compered by a great Glaswegian comedian (all we'll say is it would have taken a brave soul to heckle the guy - he'd have ripped you apart (comedically speaking) in a heartbeat!). He was great and got every contestant to introduce themselves and build their confidence, loads of jokes, loads of swearing. Many different catergories of beard length and each had a 'natural' and 'styled' subcategories. Styled beards were the most fun and ranged from a full Scottish Thistle to some amazing handlebar moustaches. There was even a section for fake beards so that anyone, but mostly ladies, could take part if they wanted. There were some really creative ideas in there. Really great atmosphere and admiration for eccentricity coupled with probably the worst (or maybe best?) thrash metal band for miles, we made a polite exit stage left when the music started so that we could get an early night! See the video below for all the craziness of the evening....
