Our little house is tucked really out of the way, down a 6 mile long single carriageway road which is a horseshoe, joining the main road at both ends. We are about halfway along that road. Along the road there are about 10 houses and three or four farms, so there is little reason for people to go down that way or pass through.
We set up the wildlife cameras in the garden hoping to capture the red squirrel again, and instead it unintentionally captured all the traffic going by. I loved watching the huge variety of vehicles and people, and so I put together a little movie of my favourite clips. This is footage over the course of 3 months from January to April 2023 which gave us an idea of how the weather changed at the house too. All in all the camera was triggered just a few times each day, showing just how quiet it really is there.
One of the highlights of the year, though, is the Argyll rally, which we made sure we were at home for in June 2023! It was a full weekend of classic rally cars screaming round the country roads of Argyll, beginning and ending in Dunoon. It goes right past our door, so we get ringside seats! You can see the 2022 highlights video here.
It saw the UK's top rally crews return to Dunoon and the Cowal Peninsula to tackle the 2023 Argyll Rally. The event returned to Dunoon, where the rally commenced, with two runs of the iconic town centre stage. The opening Friday Night leg featured a further four stages including the epic 14 mile Otter Ferry stage. Sadly, this epic stage was actually cancelled following a couple of cars coming off the road and having to be recovered. John had volunteered to marshal that night and, in the and, we stood in the field for about 3 hours and saw just an ambulance and a police car. However, we met Willy, who was kind enough to go to his mum's house and bring all the spectators (about 10 of us) hot tea to keep us going!
The second leg commenced on Saturday morning with crews tackling two loops of four uniquely challenging stages before returning to Dunoon stadium for the finish. John marshalled for this stage too, so I hung round in the garden, and in the field across the road and watched the cars fly past. Above is a small compilation of loud cars!
The event formed a round of two of the biggest championships in the UK; The KNC Groundworks Motorsport UK Scottish Rally Championship and The Protyre BTRDA Asphalt Rally Championship, as well as The AS Performance North of England Tarmacadam Rally Championship, The SD34 MSG Stage Rally Championship and The HRCR Mini Sport Cup.
