Another room in need of a complete strip back and start again was the guest toilet - the toilet was not flush against the wall, the sink too big and the mirror set into what was originally an external window (now with the beautiful picture from Ali on the other side). It didn't fit or finish well. The wood work was also painted and we wanted it to be stripped back to the original wood.
Again - a project started in February and still almost, but not quite, complete as we headed into May!
So, work was intense - paint stripping took ages - modern chemical products simply weren't working so the heat gun and sander were the go to tools!
The mirror came out of the recess and we refitted a solid plasterboard back, which we hope to finish with a couple of shelves, either glass or wood, set into the alcove.
Tikamoon provided the sink, sink unit and mirror on the end wall, Victoria Plumbing the lovely tiles in a bamboo style to fit with the Japanese theme, the radiator was from Claybrook Studios and has had a few appreciative comments, including from Ally, the plumber - expensive but worth every penny in our opinion.
Along the way, Ally cracked the old toilet just as he was tightening up the last screw, which took quite some time to replace, partly due to his availability and partly as the new toilet didn't have a syphon fitted in the cistern (which it should have). Anyway, we should have bitten the bullet and bought a new one in the first place, we were just trying to keep the original character in there somewhere. The old toilet cistern was too wide to allow the lovely antique brass flush handle to bit fitted, but the new loo has a slimmer cistern which means it could go on after all.
Finally, 3rd May, the new toilet was installed and working - just final painting of the walls and carpeting was required, which we did the following weekend. Optional shelves set into the recess, if we feel like it, will follow at a later date.
