Tuesday we thought of venturing to the other side of Loch Fyne, as little as 10 miles as the crow flies but about 40 miles drive as you have to travel up the loch side then down the other! A quick call in at Fyne Ales on the way to pick up a couple of beers and we were soon in Minard to see Adam and Emma, the previous owners of our house.
Their 'new' house could be described as a major project, and we hope they both stay strong over what will be many months of sheer grit and determination. We hope that they get an outcome they deserve - a beautiful, traditional croft style cottage a stones throw away from the loch shores and with Crarae gardens literally as the back garden! As ever, a quick coffee turned into a couple of hours of catching up and an impromptu picnic loch side.
Time was ticking on - gone 3pm in the afternoon, but the weather was looking better and better so we called in a Crarae Gardens. It was more a lovely woodland walk than a garden, but a very relaxing, and quiet wander was worth the visit. We then headed further south to Kilmartin to see the well preserved and intricate burial stones of local inhabitants from hundreds of years ago.
We also stopped to check out the ancient standing stones and cairns. Think Stonehenge but on a smaller scale but with the ability to walk amongst the stones and you're close. We also called in at the Neolithic rock carvings and wondered what people 3000 years ago were trying to capture. The carvings are relatively simple geometric shapes, but fascinating to think what these ancient people were trying to convey or capture - the night sky? the positions of their villages? or just random doodlings? The modern day guest will never know.
