There is a lot of loch shore and coastline and trying to find new places for a little stretch is part of what we're trying to do. Glenan Bay is just next to the ferry terminal to Tarbert at Portavadie and we headed there for a wander.
The path isn't brilliant and perhaps we could have/should have taken a route less close to the shoreline (the forest track), but the water looked crystal clear. We got to a twin curved beach leading to a small island, just short of the bay itself and had a rest on a rock for a while before inspecting the island's beaches.
Our friend, Martin, also joined us, flying up from Bristol for a few days. John and he headed out for some 'Brokeback Mountain time' and they explored the community forest at Tighnabruaich on a cold and windy day. The community forest has been in place for over ten years and a lot of work is going on, putting hardcore paths in for walking and cycling. They headed up (ambitiously for the day and John's condition) to Barr Liath, which is 310m above sea level. They got to about 200m but quite rightly turned back as John was getting pretty tired and the weather was going to get rainy.
New eatery discovered was Kames Hotel. We don't normally think 'let's eat at a hotel' but this is a great find. Martin demolished a Sunday slow roast lamb carvery which was great quality and it gave John inspiration to use the same place for a birthday meal for Liz on the 13th March. John had a lovely fishcake (smoked haddock) with chips and Liz chose slow cooked feather blade of beef with mustard mash and Guinness gravy. It looked amazing (to John who shouldn't eat beef now) and tasted great to Liz. Their puddings didn't disappoint either, with a lemon tart with fruit compote. Definitely one to keep on the list for a treat either for ourselves of friends and family!
